The science of the sand

Trace the four Mothers and watch a complete shield grow from them. These figures are not chosen like cards: Daughters, Nieces, Witnesses and Judge are calculated according to the rules of geomancy.

What is geomancy?

Geomancy is a traditional form of divination built from points traced on earth or sand. In the Arabic tradition it was known as ilm al-raml, the “science of the sand”. It later reached Europe, where its method was arranged in a diagram called the geomantic shield.

Its sixteen figures are made from four lines. Each line keeps one or two points according to an odd or even result. These combinations produce symbols such as Via, the way; Albus, clarity; Acquisitio, gain; and Carcer, the limit.

How your geomantic shield is calculated

The reading begins with four figures called Mothers. They are the only figures generated directly. The four Daughters are made by reading the Mothers’ lines horizontally; pairs are then combined by parity to form four Nieces, two Witnesses and finally the Judge.

The application also shows the Reconciler, a final figure created by joining the Judge to the first Mother. It does not add another random outcome: it turns the main answer into practical guidance.

How to interpret the Judge and Witnesses

The Judge summarises the central tendency of the consultation. The right Witness describes the starting impulse and the left shows how the matter develops. A favourable figure does not guarantee an outcome, just as a restrictive figure does not predict failure: both point to conditions, timing and decisions worth observing.

You can focus the reading on a general situation, love, work or money. Ask one question, avoid repeating it immediately in search of a different answer, and use the shield to think more clearly rather than replacing your own judgement.
